Animal House

A modern pavilion with vernacular roots, the Animal House is a sophisticated place for male bonding over cigars, poker games, grilling, you name it…it is the ultimate man-cave.

Here’s the story:

The homeowner is an avid game hunter, but the lady of the house insisted there be no game hunting “trophies” displayed in the main house. Animal House is designed as a pavilion focused on the “trophy” display, creating a win-win living arrangement.

Old, vernacular barns provide design inspiration of simple volumes, rustic materials, horizontal siding and pitched metal roofs complemented by crisply detailed modern components. The two story glass system delicately encloses the poker and gaming area that overlooks the woodland.

The pavilion is situated on a small rise between the tennis court and wooded area, extending the experience of Animal House as one overlooks the wooded area on one side and the manor house & tennis court on the other side.

The wood clad interior walls are not load bearing and act as floating display screens for the taxidermy components. The wood walls are separated from stone and concrete by horizontal and vertical glass strips along with open corners of glass, visually lightening the space.
